Our Story:For two weeks in August 1998, Sunny Govan Community Radio broadcast out of the former Police Station in Orkney Street in Govan. This innovative project brought together a group of people as diverse as Govan itself. Initially a one-off celebration of the G51 area, the overwhelmingly positive response showed there was a clear demand for regular and permanent radio service in the area. Between 1998 and 2002 Sunny Govan continued to broadcast annually for four weeks a year and from 2002 we have been broadcasting continuously on the web.
In 2005 Sunny Govan Community Radio was successful in achieving a full time community radio license in recognition of how the group worked as pioneers of the community radio sector. |
Programming:
Our daytime programming typically consists of about 60% music and 40% speech. We like to talk about topics of local interest, such as arts and cultural programmes, community magazine programmes, local news and event information, issue-based talk shows, health information and advice.
Our musical output is driven by our community, (which we research through surveys and questionnaires) and reflects the diversity of the local community. Our recent surveys suggest that people's musical tastes extend across many musical genres and we do our best to provide 'a bit of something for everyone'. At Sunny Govan Community Radio we are passionate about local talent and actively promote local music and performances. We aim to broadcast at least 12 hours of live programming every day (usually between 10am and midnight), using the rest of the time to repeat our most popular programmes. While the majority of our output is locally produced, we actively work with other like-minded Community Radio Stations in Scotland and across the world to exchange programming. |
Community Radio
The essential differences between community radio and other types of radio are:
We are proud to be a small, accessible social and cultural tool to be used by local people for personal and communal empowerment. We are based right where we should be, in the community, to work effectively with those people. |
Volunteering
In becoming a community radio volunteer you will join a global movement which is emerging on every continent.
It's an exciting time at Sunny G 103.5FM as we extend our programming and community projects and we are always looking for more local people to become involved in the station. Whatever your skill we would love to hear from you. We have a wide range of volunteering opportunities such as:
Due to financial and time constraints, please be aware that we are at capacity in terms of training volunteers who wish to produce and/or present radio at the moment. However we will be running very competitively priced courses designed to prepare people for radio broadcasting. Click here for more info.
